Well, it can feel that way if you choose to look at it that way. The way I view it, and how I coach my clients is this: social media and your writing platform in general is about building relationships with readers. Connection. Authenticity. Storytelling. Sharing what interests you and starting conversations around that.
If you read my book (on book marketing - you can find more on my website) or any of my articles here on marketing or author branding - you'll see that my approach is not about spamming "read my stuff!" links constantly. I'm absolutely against that, entirely.
Being generous and friendly works wonders, too. Comment on others' posts (as you did here - and I followed you!). Book promo is just one part of book marketing, so keep that in mind. Hope that helps!
